Front garden inspiration

I live in a bungalow and wanted to insert a centrepiece shrub or tree in a 4ft sq raised bed in my front garden. I'd like year round interest but it can grow too tall as it would block the light into my bedroom window. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

What about a variegated cornus? Cornus alba elegantissima. It has red stems in winter white flowers early summer, and is easy to grow.
