Rotten carrots

I was weeding the Polytunnel today and when checking around my carrots, found that several had faded leaves which just came away in my hand with rotten orange carrot tops.

Im not sure what has happened as I've not had this before. Any ideas? Is it over watering, a disease, overcrowding?

Thanks for any help

  • Oh really, I thought you just ended up with holes etc in your carrots . I do ventilate the tunnel but have the finest mesh screen doors to prevent this. This is the 4th year in the tunnel and the only  issues I've had in this time is poor germination and small carrots up to now.

    thanks for the reply

Sounds like a rot - bacterial infection - rather than carrot fly.

  • Thanks both, If it's a bacteria, will this stay in the soil, does it need treating and I presume I shouldnt compost any carrots!

    Thanks again

If it's a bacterium, not composting sounds like a good idea.    It shouldn't be a problen next year since you'll be growing something different there.  I tend to follow roots  with lots of compost and spuds, and the nice microbes in the compost might do away with the nasty ones.

This site might help to identify the problem

(the link making thing doesn't seem to be wotking).

  • I've tried and tried but to no avail any tips?

  • Hi hopefully you can see the leaves that pull off the top crown and the rotten carrot left behind.
