Anyone know where I can get well-rotted manure in Lewisham, South East London?

I really need to get my hands on some manure to improve the soil quality in my garden, but it's a little difficult to come by in south east London! Any suggestions?

Garden Centres and DIY stores stock it in bags. The quality might be variable though so you'll have to chance it!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Have you tried Googling Riding schools in Lewisham? I did and came up with three. Only you can say if they are near to you.

Loads of stables around Chislehurst, Mottingham, Bexley and Sidcup (see link) if you fancy a run out.  Perhaps call first to see if you need to take bags etc.

The 50l growsure FYM from Wickes is pretty good stuff - 3 for a tenner.

But do check if you buy raw manure that the horses haven't been stabled on shavings - they don't rot down.

I have also been looking and was going to order a dumpy bag (1000 litres), but found that the stuff from the firm above is Levingtons Well-Rotted Farmyard Manure. It comes in 50L bags and is about the same price including delivery.

I bought 1/2 pallet a couple of yrs ago and it seems fine.

I've just ordered a pallet load (60 x 50L so 3000 litres) to share with my neighbour - £190 or about £3 per 50L, not esp cheap, but all things considered the best deal for me.

There a lots of stables around here with bags of horse manure by the road ranging from 50p to £1 a bag, but it's all fresh stuff and would have to be rotted down before use. Plenty of stables offer it free too, but again, it's fresh and you'll need your own bags and shovel

  • Blimey!     Look at the price.

Go to an equestrian centre and they'll let you have it for free if you take some poly bags and just collect it.

Come here and you could have 5 tonnes if you had a truck!
