Path & Patio Weedkilling

I am a pensioner who for many years used Sodium Chlorate to keep my paths and patio weed free.

Since this was banned in 2009 I have been seeking a cheap but effective alternative as "Roundup" and other similar products are very expensive has anyone got any suggestions ??
