Can anyone identify this strange looking fungus.

    Might be a Stump Puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme) with something else growing through it.  Or the round ball is the volva and the 'shoot' is the stem with the cap having melted away as Inkcap mushrooms do.  I think the latter is more likely.

    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
