Poorly lily

image

This is a leaf off my tall pink lily, which has flowered well in previous years. This year, the leaves have been really bad and the flowers are much smaller than last year. I'd love to be able to save it for next year but not sure what to do. Can anyone help please?

Thanks for that Verdun. Not sure of the variety, but it stands about five and a half feet tall and has dark pink flowers. It is in the ground at the moment.

Great, I'll do that, thanks. I was beginning to think I'd got a virus or something equally nasty!

It possibly could be some kind of virus as lilies are susceptible to these. As you say you've had it for "previous years" and reading your description, it sounds like it's on it's way out to me. If you have more lilies that are growing well in the surrounding area, I'd be tempted to remove it and bin it just in case...

Oh no! Just when I was feeling a bit more positive!

I did say "could be" ! Do you have more lilies growing in the area and if so, do they have the same symptoms?

Not in the soil, but i do have some smaller ones nearby in a pot and they are looking ok, does that count?

Yes - what you say is good as if it is a virus, then it doesn't appear to have spread. It could be just some sort of physiological disorder which is affecting it...

Doing what Verdun says will let you know one way or the other - if you follow his advice and it doesn't improve next year, then you will know it's a virus.

Thank you very much, I'll give it a go.
