Horseradish - When to Harvest

Hi all,

I planted my Horseradish in early May and I'm just wondering when it will be ready to harvest? I have read online that horseradish should be picked in October / November, but the leaves aren't looking so healthy, so I thought that maybe it was dying back because its ready?

Help much appreciated.

When we had horseradish in the garden (and hedgerows) we just dug a root as we needed it. Pa would dig it, peel and grate it and Ma would make horseradish sauce with it.  Any grated root left over would be put in a jar with some vinegar and used to make sauce next time we had roast beef.

But beware! If you cry when you prepare onions, watch out when you prepare horseradish.

It is the most terrible thug/spreader. It should be sold with a warning.

Some comes up every year in one of my borders (I didn't buy it). I have tried to weed it out and have tried numerous times to transplant it to somewhere more suitable, but whenever I do so that bit dies. Now I just leave it, the flowers are quite pretty, like a small Crambe! I like horseradish sauce when it is strong enough to come down your nose, but can't afford roast beef very often! A little is good grated over beetroot salad though.

Ben, when you say the leaves aren't looking healthy - can you post us a picture?

when I grate horseradish I wear swimming goggles, sounds made but it stops you feeling like your eyeballs are going to burst into flames and fall out
