Dear People,

Two plants in pots in my balcony.  The mauve one I bought, but can't find the label.  It

has three mauve petals and kind of clusters of buds or something else.  Sorry, mauve flower pic not brilliant, but no flowers at present.

The second has just appeared - has big leaves.  Any clues what it is and will it flower?

Thanks so much,

Bella 2

The first is a tradescantia (aka Spider wort)

The third pic looks to me like a Canna just coming into flower

Thanks a million to you both!  Amazed that the mauve one is a kind of Tradescantia - thought that was just the very leafy wandering plant that I have elsewhere on my balcony (not doing too well).  Are those clumps spent flowers, or what?  Funny how they open up a few at a time.  So pretty.

As for the canna or ginger lily - will post a pic when it flowers.  Can't wait!

    Thanks again image

Just looked up the Tradescantia Concord Grape.  Unsurprisingly it says to deadhead them.  Any clues as to what is a bud and what is a spent flower?

As promised here is a picture of the beautiful canna lily, which has started to bloom.

    What a pretty canna image

I don't deadhead my Spiderworts - I just leave them to get on with things - they seem happy enough image

Isn't that canna lovely, and I don't even know how it got there!

Thanks for that advice.  The spiderwort (in my opinion nothing like a spider or a wart!) is so pretty,  Every day a few flowers open up, don't know if they wither or its the same ones opening again.

Thanks for the compliment and the info!

  • I rarely feed tradescantia as they are used to poor soils in their native surroundings. I have several types and love them.

Thanks Jenny and Hostafan.  That canna really cheers you up on a bad day!  Here she is today.
