Sunflowers

I can't believe I'm asking this question! I feel quite ashamed! Everybody else seems to succeed...but I can't grow sunflowers! I don't want six feet high things - just lots of the shorter versions (e.g. Italian White) popping up in various parts of the garden. I sow them lovingly in individual pots. Sometimes they germinate, sometimes they don't - and those that do are never very good. Am I perhaps over-coddling them? How do other people get such lovely displays?

The only time I ever grew them was last year (and this was accidental - spilt seeds). This year I have decided to put them in 3 inch pots filled with seed compost and then placed them in my conservatory which is around 15 degrees and they are 2 inches already (only sown 2 weeks ago). Let them do their thing, don't overwater them, just make sure the compost is moist and let them do the growing. I find if I don't check on them for a few days, then they seem to have changed so much compared to checking them everyday image

  • Hi There mine are the same put in small pots germinated them in my propergater when 2" tall removed them to my very cool GH and seem to be fine, in fact I left a couple in the warmth to see any difference in growth and they all seem to be about the same and are already setting their second leaves.
