My Cherry Tree Needs Urgent Help! Advice Please...

I am devastated!  Suddenly my beautiful Big Burlat cherry Tree, which I've lovingly cared for since getting, is showing signs of... well, I don't know!  I have taken some pictures of the leaves & fear it's not good!  Everything was going so well...

I got the tree in October last year & it's planted out in a large pot.  I even have a special coat for it for winter!  It was approximately 3 foot when purchased, has not flowered this year, no fruit but has grown tremendously.  In fact, it needs pruning but no point if it's dying!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated....

I think it may simply be getting ready for autumn - my grapevine leaves are colouring up already

  • what size pot is it in

  • @ Gary - It's in a 40cm x 40 x 40...

@ Dovefromabove - How embarrassing! image  It just shows what a novice gardener I am!  I thought that the beginning of August would be far too early for 'getting ready for Autumn'... Oh dear!  It's my first fruit tree & if all goes well I want a mini orchard in my Yarden!  My Granddaughters will love it, hence why it's so important I get it right!  Any tips on pruning?

Thanks for your help so far...

Stone fruits (cherries/plums etc) must not be pruned in the autumn/winter or they are likely to get Silverleaf Disease.

The time to prune cherries is around midsummer - lots of info here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=318

Just checking - what sort of compost is your cherry tree in? It really needs John Innes No 3 loam-based compost ... and it does get plenty of water doesn't it?

  • Yep!  Got that right!  image  It's in John Innes No 3 & I give lots of water on the days we have no rain or little rain.  Thank you for the link... lots of great information that I can actually understand!  I went on some gardening sites for advice on pruning & needed a degree to understand the technical descriptions!  Not everyone is an expert gardener!...

The RHS site is usually a really good source of information image

  • Have you got a place in the garden for it

Cherry trees lose their leaves quite early in autumn.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I believe so Busy-Lizzie  image  I am really surprised though because it's still Summer!  As it's preparing to loose it's leaves, am I okay to prune it now or not?

@ Gary Baldwin - It has a wonderful place in the garden that it seems to love!  It gets the first morning sun, then sun from 1pm.  It's sheltered too but last Winter I did keep moving slightly because of the strong winds....
