Alternatives to lavender

Hi,

I’m fairly new to the whole gardening world and need a little advice.

I would like to remove the small fence we have running along the front of our front garden and was thinking of putting in a row of lavender instead as a partition. The problem is that our street can be fairly windy at times and I have read that lavender doesn’t always like this.

So my questions are:

  1. Is it true that lavender doesn’t really like the wind?
  2. What is a good alternative to lavender? I would like something evergreen, flowering and as full of scent...the area is also on the north side of the house so is pretty shaded. On the plus side the soil is normal and seems to drain well.

I am planning on redesigning the front garden with more of a modern theme over the next year (or two!) so something with that feel would be good.

Any help would be appreciated.

THANKS!! image

The shadyness is more of a problem to lavender than the wind.

Are you looking for something about the same height as lavender? The evrgreen euonymus is easy going, cheap if you need several, can be clipped or not. Falls down on flowers (insignificant) and scent (never noticed any). Box, same. The scented shrubs like lavender and rosemary are sun lovers.

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Grow basic box or yew and keep severly trimmed to required shape and size...to get a contemporary look and feel. Plant scented plants on the inside?

  • box is a good idea.
