If the heathers get too tall and woody, you can dig a hole and bury the whole plant, so that just the green ends approx 8" are still showing, i sunk 3 heathers last year, still doing well and avoids that straggly woody look. I try to use low growing heathers, upto 8" which seem to keep a good shape.
