Lavandula angustifolia growth problem

I bought a 1 year old Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender) last summer, potted it and fed it with a high potash solution (Phostrogen All-Purpose Plant Food) til October when I pruned it. This is what it currently looks like - as you can see some of it died back and hasn't grown. Did I prune it incorrectly, and if so, what did I do and how can I rectify it both for now and when October comes and it needs pruning again?

  • Looks like you have done what I often do when pruning and cut off a bit too much image

You need to be careful when pruning lavender not to cut back to old woody stems as they cannot regrow from old wood only the fresh looking green stems.

Not sure October is the time to do it either. I think it's as rainbowfish says, trim up after flowering but not into old wood.

  • Thanks everyone, sounds good advice and I appreciate the links. Sounds like late summer's the time to prune.

What's the technique to try and get a second flowering too before the season's over?

I've never known a second flowering with lavender.
