What is wrong with this necterine tree

This is a friend's tree. Only other info I can give is that all the nectarines withered away.

The tree looks fine. I'd say perhaps the tree was stressed at the time the baby fruits were forming and so it decided to abort them to save its strength for another year. Maybe the watering was a bit skimpy? Maybe it got very cold overnight?

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
