growing chrysanthemums for the first time, do I take the side buds off or not ?
Bumping up the list.
Ceres, what are you on about ?
Depends on the type of chrysanthe and your desired result. Leave the cushion type alone to get nice clump of small flowers. Removing the side shoots from the taller ones to get a single large flower. My grandfather used to do this and place a bag around the main flower to protect it from pests and weather, to make excellent cut flowers.
When he got older, he just pinched out the top bud instead to get a better spray of smaller flowers.
I personally prefer lots of smaller flowers to enjoy for longer
Thanks rainbow, now I have to make up my mind one large flower or lots of small
or some of each ...........
That's a good idea Dove, best of both.
I like to have my cake and eat it
