Hi everyone, I want to plant a rambling/climbing rose that will grow along my fence. is there a rose that grows quickly and spreads a lot and ideally has a strong scent? Thanks all Yvonne
Thanks matt. I really meant, do you have to give it extra feed and water more often because it is in dry soil? Or isn't it? I put a largeish conifer in a pot near my summerhouse last year and over the winter it died, despite all the rain. I'd had it for years and realised that I had really miscalculated how much rain it would get. I water pots in the summer but not in winter.
Anyway, back to roses. There are some super-vigorous roses, which grow fast but also grow pretty large and you have to take this into acount when you plan where they will go. Careful thought is needed, especially about how they will be supported.
I put in a Zephirine Drouhin last February and it is beautiful now - a thornless climber and has grown amazingly considering the cold wet conditions and the heavy clay soil we have here in this part of Scotland. The flowers are a beautiful pink and smell gorgeous - not too strong just perfect for my nose I love it so much I have just bought another and planted it yesterday and another 2 for the local primary school.

Much easier to look here and then ask for recommendations on the forum based on a selection that you make. Roses are very personal
There's loads - have a look at this site http://www.classicroses.co.uk/ there's a really good search facility on the left hand side.

I planted a Gertrude Jekyll next to my Back Door last year. The fragrance is amazing and I'm itching for it to come into flower again.
Its described as a climbing rose ( With a little bit of training)
How fabulous, Matt!
How do you manage the fact that it is so near the house wall?
I attatched a Trellis to the house
