What have I grown?

I grew these monster plants from seed, from an extremely old unmarked packet. They have now overtaken my raised beds! They are so healthy looking and I've nurtured them like all my plants that I don't to rip them up. I have no idea what they are and neither do my seasoned Gardner friends,

so hoping someone can shed some light! They kinda look like potato plants and I did pull one up,but the root system was extremely fine and hair like with no growths that could become potatoes... Any ideas?

Some varieties of dahlia can grow to 6ft tall from seed in a single year!  Most will grow to between 1 and 3 feet tall though.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Definitely dahlias!

My chocolate coloured leaved ones have profusely self sown themselves last year and this Spring I have a lovely brown carpet. I am waiting to see how variable the flowers will be

  • Yes, definitely a dahlia leaf that. Lucky you!

  • so excited now! Will post a pic of the blooms when they open! image
