Gladioli not flowering

We planted a whole lot of gladioli in a sunny border, and now have lots of healthy leaves but not one flower among them, which is disappointing! Has anyone any ideas why this might be please?

Think it's still early days yet for gladioli - more patience needed image

  • They were in flower well before this date last year. However lots of people have commented that they are very late this year. Mine have only just thrown up flower spikes, but not yet open. By this time last year I had loads of lovely blooms.image It must be the cool nights.

  • Thanks everyone, that's a relief! I think I was rattled because my aunts have a few spikes already. Mine must be a bit later then image

I always think of gladioli as flowering in time for the Horticultural Club's autumn show in the village where I used to live - around the second weekend in September image

Gladi take such a long time to flower so don't worry image

but sometimes if they are planted too deep that can affect flowering

but it`s early days yet Jennifer.

  • That's very reassuring, hopefully I'll see some flowers when I come back from my holiday then image

  • Have just picked the first few, about 5 weeks later than last year?

I have three kinds in the garden, all in pretty comparable conditions... one has bloomed weeks ago, long gone now, one has plenty of leaves but no flowers and one has only even started making leaves this past couple of weeks... So, a lot depends on the variety also, and I think also the size of the corms.
