I believe she may be asking which is better to plant in. I had a lady come in to my Garden Centre the other day, and she swore by using Top soil for the big container she was buying to plant in.
I guess this could be a good discussion as I have only used Compost for Pots
believe it or not the best results iv had in pots so far has been 40/40 molesoil / topsoil and 20 fine grit,iv been out collecting molesoil again today, i dont know what the old mole does to it but it just works so well, and free

I guess its the soil left after a mole has fecked up someone's golfcourse or lawn ,don't have them in Ireland thank God

for some reason Brumbull they live all around our allotments but have never yet been onto any, they never cause any probs and just supply us with wonderfull mole soil

Topsoil is not supposed to be used in pots because it hasn't been sterilised. However, for long term planting, I use about half and half topsoil and compost and take my chances with disease. I haven't had any problems so far. It contains more nutrition and doesn't go hard, and it is more substantial for larger plants than compost. because it si heavier, it makes a more stable base for tall plants than compost. If I wanted good drainage, I'd add grit.
I'm bracing myself to be shown to be an idiot, and probably I should just use the right grade of John Innes, but this does work quite well for me.
