is re-cyling your green bin ,a good thing?

I read with alarm at the news that weed killers that have been included in the re-cyle bin along with the grass clippings been contaminating the compost at centers or your own bin for that matter.They have these weed killers been banned in america because they effect vegetables and make them inedible .The soil being effected for years and could account for the damage we have experienced,according to the times news paper.The weed killer is Clopyralid lingers in the soil for years long after it has been used.I do not use weed killers and glad I don't,it makes you think what results it would have on humans if the effected veg is eaten and where you are buying from compost wise.

I saw this item in the times, flowering rose and it seems that people use Clopyralid on their lawns to kill weeds. I think this is so sad as we all see birds digging in the grass for worms and insect larvea.. Perhaps this is the reason that some species are declining. Hedgehogs are also down in numbers and I wonder if this is partly caused by slug pellets.
The more people realise that all these chemicals and sprays are not only killing and destroying our habitats and ecosystems but also have an impact on human health, the less people will buy them. Manufactures of these chemicals rely on people's ignorance. The more people know about the issue, the greater impact it will have on people looking for alternative methods.
I do wish Gardeners World on TV took a more pro-active focus on these BIG issues. Geoff Hamilton was also very clear on the benefits of going organic and everything he did revolved around an organic approach. Monty Don does mention organic methods rather sparingly.
In terms of green recycling schemes, perhaps we could all write to our local councils and ask them to only accept green waste from gardeners that use chemicals and pesticides that don't persist in the environment. At least I would be a start.
You can buy the compost that our recycling centre makes. I don't buy it because I see what people throw over the wall when I am down there, stuff that shouldn't be going over for garden waste and I really wouldn't want it in my garden. I totally agree Tim, Gardeners world should do more. Geoff Hamilton was just brilliant and always for the Organic side of gardening. I haven't used chemicals in the garden for over 25 years I let the wild life do the job, and damn fine job they do as well.

The original poster asked if recycling was a problem.
Recycing is not a problem. It's the fact that many gardeners want to buy dangerous chemicals that is the problem.
Even without recycling, dangerous chemicals spread on the garden find their way into the water table and pollute the environment.
and just a little reminder to those who chuck grass clippings into fields with horses ,don't! with added chemicals and the fact horses can not digest dumped cut mo wen grass what ever you think and can ill very quickly and often die,now back to to the compost ,I hope the said chemicals have not got into the food chain because in the end its us humans who its going to effect too!
