Fruit trees near conifers

I should like to start a small orchard. But the place I'd like to do it is quite near a Leylandii hedge (kept at about 10 foot). Is this a waste of time?

    Thank you Verdun. That's good news. Do you know how far the roots of the Leylandii are likely to have spread?

    I didn't plant them - my neighbour did. I'd like them to be as close as possible. I am sure digging a trench is good advice.
