Large brown seed pod ID

Asking on behalf of someone else, these have been found floating in a large pond in Glasgow. I've trawled google images of various seed pods but cannot find what it is. Any ideas?

What trees are there near the pond?

does anything that grows in Glasgow produce seeds like that?

Does anything produce seeds like that at this time of year?

Not naturally occurring would be my guessimage

I know seeds like that get washed up on shores but not in ponds.

Good idea Simon. They'll have to work out who nicked them and threw them in the pondimage

I've just google mapped it and the pond is 1 mile down the road from the botanic gardens!
