Idenity of Clematis please.
in Plants
Can anyone identify this Clematis please? It was in my garden when I moved here. I t grows to a height of at least 2 and 1/2 metres or about 9 feet and has beautiful large flowers. It is full of buds at the moment and some are just starting to open.

I've had a suggestion from another forum that it might be Clematis 'Ville de Lyon'. Could that be right? I'm trying to make up a database of my plants so I can redo a border in the autumn and also trying to take cuttings from my named clematis to use on the west facing fence of the new border, so any ideas would be of help.
If the colours on your images are correct, then it is definitely not Ville de Lyon which is a shiny red.
The upward facing buds suggest that it is patens group, definitely not viticella.
.................possibly Gipsy Queen.
Niobe? The colour is always difficult to assess from a picture but the leaves and flower shape look just about right. Look at this link.

It's so lovely does it matter?
'You must have some bread with it me duck!'
Looks like my Niobe - although very hard to tell from a pic as lamweedysays. My flowers look a bit bigger.
I agree - if you love it, doesn't matter what it is!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I do have Gipsy Queen but this one is redder so perhaps it is Niobe as the colour looks about right. Thanks all and as you say I'll enjoy it no matter what it's called.
