Sisyrinchium striatum

I love this plant as it grew in a beautiful garden I once knew - I grew it for the first time this year from two small plugs bought on Ebay.  They've grown really really well and have been covered in flowers, however the flowers are nearly over.

There seem to be two schools of thought

  1. cut the whole plant hard back now (a bit like bearded irises), or
  2. cut out the dead flower stalks and remove any discoloured leaves now, and then cut hard back and divide in the spring

I do the latter. Definitely remove the flower stalks no matter which way you do it, or you will have millions of seedlings around.
