We make a really nice Quince Jelly from these. Wait until they are properly ripe (when they turn yellow, end of August here. Ripe when they smell really nice).
Slice them up and boil them Strain the cooked fruit and then use 1lb of sugar to a 1 pint of liquid. Gorgeous. Had some on my toast this morning.

Hi jpsbcfc. It looks like a quince to me.
thank you.
are the fruits useable ( I am sure I have heard of quince jelly ) or do I just leave them for the wildlife?
That's Chaenomeles, as opposed to Cydonia oblonga, both known as quince
Saw a father once encouraging his young son to steal one from my front garden. Hope the little darling didn't break a tooth!
My Mum used to make delicious quince jelly. Seem to remember it involved loads of skimming and straining through muslin.
