Small grass space requiring attention.

Hi

Can anyone offer some advice on dealing with a grass problem area in my daughters garden? She has a small grassy area which has a large tree overshadowing it and probably takes all the goodness out of the ground. The tree is in a neighbours garden 2 doors away.I thought of turf but she said it was expensive.Grass seed is cheaper but she has an inquisitive cat and a small boy of 11months.

We thought of artificial but is that dear?

Any good cheap ideas guys?
