Mystery Plant - can you help?

This vine-like plant is growing in my friend's London garden - it's only small at the moment and has pretty heart shaped leaves and a dark stem. Any ideas what it is? I am getting conflicting opinions and thought you are the best people to ask! Thanks in advance...! x

My first thought was Black Bryony

Not Black Bryony, that has shiny leaves, but might be Black Bindweed, Fallopia convolvulus. It's hard to tell how big the leaves are from the photo.

Bindweed. Fast growing and chokes other plants as it grows up them. Resprouts from rhizomes so weedkiller is best bet or if not constant surveillance and picking it off.

    Good luck

It has to be a systemic weedkiller, ie glyphosate.

The roots go down at least 6 ft so it no good forking it out. I had an infested area in the veg patch. sprayed it three times in a year, leaving it fallow, and I still  get  weak growth.

Not convinced it's Bindweed, might be Thunbergia Alata
