Waiting, waiting, waiting for broad beans

I keep picking my broad beans but they are tiny inside.

I only have one plant so don't want to waste them ... someone gave me a seed so I could give them a go and see if I like them.

When will I know they are ready - what size will the pods be when they should be picked?

Thanks.

  • Try stopping the head of the plant when most of the flowers have set. Also make sure moisture levels ok.Stopping has the added benefit of stopping blackfly , a curse of BB's from taking over.

You can tell how big the beans are inside the pod by a gentle press on the side.

If you can not see any swelling leave alone.

I would have purchased a pound or so from your grocer to see if you like them, a lot quicker but perhaps not so much fun.

Oh I know I like to eat them, this gardening friend wanted me to have a go at growing them.

I've pinched the tops out already.

You see, this is my prob ... to my eyes the beans feel like they should be massive inside. I guess it's trial and error.

I'm gonna go in search of some visual clues by asking Mr Google.

    Thanks for your reply.
