Tomatoes

Help! The bush tomato seeds I've grown on my windowsills are starting to die. Were ok until last week, put some outside after hardening off but leaves are turning white and falling off. The four I kept inside are doing the same now. Grown bush tomatoes this way for years. Also flower seeds grown same way have been pathetic, very few germinated. Used new seed/potting compost and new modules. Anyone know what's gone wrong?

Leaves turning white is usually cold.

I only ever grow my bush ones inside greenhouse, all in fact.

Luck of the draw with seeds, if you have provided enough warmth, light and water you have done your best.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Thought outside toms may have been frosted IN JUNE! Could be compost because of rubbish germination rate. Bought it from Asda, won't again

Don't know where you are, but a friend lost the tops of her potato plants to frost at the beginning of last week; in West Wales.

Were they Asda own brand seeds?  I am on the South Coast, near South Downs, it has been down to 7d at night, having to take fruit trees (lemons etc) and brugmansias in at night.  I grew  toms in greenhouse last year for the first time, hoping for earlier toms, but they got blossom end rot.  it was way up in the high 20s by day, very cool at night.  ones in the veg plot doing very well.  Bought from different suppliers (not Asda!) Always make sure then are hardened off, for minimum of a week, before planting out.
