Giant poppies
in Plants
I didnt plant these. They just arrived. And grew and grew and grew ...The big one is about 4'6". They have several buds and I've identified them as papaver somniferum. Would they transplant, as they are completely in the wrong places, or should I put them in the recycling bin?

I think they would die, transplanted at that size. They're annuals and will seed, you can move them as small plants

They won't transplant at that size, but they'll flower soon and then die off as they're annuals.
If you want them elsewhere shake the seedheads where you want them to grow next year - you can tell when the seeds are ripe cos the seedpods will rattle.

Thanks for the advice Dove and Nut. When they first appeared I thought they would be those ones with mauve and purple flowers, which only grow to about 18". I would have been far happier with those as my garden is quite small
I wouild like to see a pic of that whopper!
That's what happens to them here
there are a few, but mostly they're compost

This charmer always has as much room as it needs in my 'sheltered-but-sunny' border. The seedheads are quite 'sculptural' and get gilded for indoor arrangements in the autumn & winter.
Next door have giant poppies , going to scatter some seeds as they look great
Saw these beauties at Wollerton Old Hall Garden a couple of weeks ago. Lovely gardens, only open two days a week though.
