japanese maple

hi

I have a japanese maple in a container and i have noticed over the last couple of weeks the leaves are starting to fade and die I have new growth on the base but the tops are wilting and dying should I re pot in a container, plant in the ground , or just leave alone, advice please

    Have you been watering it? It sounds as though it is lack of water. It has been very dry lately.
