plant ID
in Plants

Hello all, anyone any idea as to what plant this weird thing is please?
It grew like wildfire out of a pot in my yard this Spring like a huge mottled spike. It almost reminded me of reptile skin. These weird leaves unfurled from the spike and it now has what looks like the start of a huge flower, another foot long spike with a purpley, frilly edge along the length. It looks set to unfurl anytime but conitnues to grow.
I've never seen anything like it and have no idea where it's come from. The excitement of what this flower is going to look like is killing me!
If someone can ID this I would be very grateful. The plant is currently about 2-3 feet in height.
Many thanks,
Mel

Hello melanie. You say it is growing in your "yard". Do you live in the USA? This forum is based in UK so there is a chance that your plant isn't well known over here. However, somebody will probably be along soon with a suggestion.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
It looks like one of the Arisaemas, sometimes called snake lily or cobra lily - related to the arums (calla lily, jack in the pulpit etc)
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I thinks it's Dranunculus vulgaris, it's flowers are wonderful, but the smell is dreadfull...
Yes, wonderful flowers, but smells like rotting meat. The blue bottles love it.
Yes, Dranunculus. How wonderful!
Thanks again, Mel
