I have a mature philadelphus, 4 ft high but it has never flowered.  The plant is very healthy but the tips of new growth have black fly which I have treated with a home made solution of washing up liquid and water.  I bought the shrub for it's fragrant flowers but where are they? Anyone know where I am going wrong?

Do you prune it?  They bloom on last years growth.  Do you have it in a sunny location?  Although I think they'll still bloom in partial shade, just not as much?  Is your soil moist but free draining?  Have you been feeding it with BFB?

I bought one last year for my son's garden.  It's covered in buds (and black aphids which I shall go and deal with tomorrow for him)  Is it Belle Etoile?  In my experience they are smothered in flowers as long as you're careful with pruning as Blue Onion suggests.  I'm disappointed for you image
