Parsnip Failure.

Mel MMel M Posts: 347

Anyone else having problems getting parsnips to germinate this year? Last year I sowed three types of parsnip seed [3 to each station] and every single one grew. This year I have planted Gladiator [fresh seed, again 3 to each station] and only about 20% have germinated! I know parsnips can be fickle but this is daft!

Also, I plant Marvel of 4 Seasons lettuce each year but this time the lettuce are coming up as something entirely different. A large red cos! I shall no longer use this company [shall remain nameless] as it is not the first disappointment I have had with their seed.

I use the seed from Wilko, can't remember the variety but they germinate ok for me, but I sow thickly on heavy clay soil and sow radish at the same time in the same drill. I never pay a fortune for anything, but I am tight.

  • I sow Hollow Crown, Kings Seeds. They germinate pretty well.

I had 100% germination with mine. I use a small plastic zip bag with damp compost and seeds put in it. Then the bag goes in my airing cupboard and they germinate in 3-5 days. All my flower seeds are germinated this way and 95% of my  veg seeds.image
