Strange Conifer growth

I have had a minature conifer in the garden for several years, but the top has sudenly started to grow into a different conifer. Can the top be cut off to keep the minature shape or is there some thing I can do to stop it reverting to another tree.  Have tried to upload a photo, but kept being rejected.

    Hi Reg image

To upload a photo on here you need to click on the green tree icon on the toolbar above where you type your post.  If you get an error message ignore it and wait - it should be ok.

If it still doesn't upload you may need to reduce the size a bit.

    Good luck

I'll take it all back the photo has come up. As you can see it was a compact small conifer, but now looks like a christmas tree on top

I should think a 'dwarf' cultivar has reverted and is showing its true form.

If there is definitely only one trunk then I think nut is right and you need to follow the rampant growth right back to where it grows from the main trunk and cut it off there.  If you leave it, it will take over and the dwarf parts will dwindle away and die.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

They can do that Edd. Much like a variegated cultivar reverts to green

Thanks. It is just the one trunk, but has forked at the top, with the larger fur taking over.

Will try and cut it at the joint and hope I can keep the original shape.

Reg, remember your plant ( Picea glauca albertiana conica) is a mutation from the original, it's genes have just re-aligned back to ancestors.
