Box plants to make balls

Hi all. Just wanted some advice on box. I planted 4 plants in a tub and want to make balls but at the moment they look more block ish. Question is do I trim now or wait months. They were planted about 3 months ago and seem to have a couple of inches growth at the top but no side growth.

    Would you put a cage or template in or just shape into small balls and wait for them to creep larger??

    All my box balls have been grown from cuttings - you start shaping them as small balls, and before you know it they are large ones.  For balls it is quite easy to cut by eye - I wouldn't bother with a frame.  Good luckimage
