Need to know when and best way to prune this tree I believe it's an Apple As can see it has been shaped and looked after by a gardener My responsibility this year and prefer to do myself I have had some blossom and now it's leafing out more but a few leggy bits appearing. Prune the shoots back soon by hand or by hedge trimmer? Was thinking trimmer in a few more weeks

Prune by hand in August. Hedge trimmer will result in smashed up stems, loss of fruit spurs a general consequent risk of infection. Prune earlier and you'll have to repeat the job.

note i would only be trimming the top inch off that has sprouted up big to keep its shape

    not into any hard wood

I think you are confusing top fruit with topiary.image

If thats an apple it's been ruined. Totally the wrong shape for an apple.
