How big are the pots your'e trying to grow in Nicola, clematis and roses will grow easily in pots, so what are you doing?

    Hi Nicola

can you plant in the ground?

clematis like roots in shade, is there any sun?

Roses need a few hours of sunlight, but some do grow in shade.

have the clematis shoots been eaten by slugs?

Nicola - try growing perennial sweet peas (Lathyrus latifolius).  They come in a variety of pinks, whites and mauves and look fabulous.  They don't really have a fragrance but they're easy to grow and will flower until the frosts.  No special treatment required just plant them and let them do their thing.  At the end of the season just cut them down and the following Spring, up they come again and romp away.
