Moving a Stage 1 Clematis Montana

IzzybusyIzzybusy Posts: 15

Hi

I have got a Clematis Montana (unsure which one, might be Mayleen) which I planted last year which has taken off great guns this year, easy 7ft in places already.  My neighbours have taken down a hedge their sides which hid our garden from theirs but we have 2ft trellis on 3 fence panels so we've lost our privacy quite a bit.  I was thinking about moving this clematis over to the trellis to create some privacy but not sure if it can be moved?  I've already planted a Clematis Elizabeth in anticipation of the hedge coming down but it doesn't seem to be doing an awful lot considering its supposed to be vigorous. Should I move it once the flowers have gone or leave it be?

Many thanks in advance.

I would leave where it is if doing well and plant a new one where you want it to cover the trellis.

I reckon you can move any plant that is in the wrong place but you will have to cut it back a fair bit to allow for the loss of some of the rootball when you dig it up, and the experts suggest that the dormant season is the best time to do this. Alternatively you could take some cuttings of the plant and use them to cover the new trellis.
