Verbena bonariensis

Is it too late to seed Verbena bonariensis for this year's flowering?

I took seed off a plant that had overwintered but not been cut down. I sprinkled it on compost three weeks ago and pricked the seedlings out today. They will flower later on in the year, probably august or september.   If you have seed , sow it now.

Well that's good news for me.  I had a lovely big one at the bottom of the garden last year that didn't overwinter.  The only other one I had was one that had seeded itself in the patio near my french windows but had also died.  Luckily, when I unlocked the french windows for the first time last week, there was a seed head stuck in the frame with loads of seeds spilling out!  I sowed them in a nursery bed so fingers crossed.

I find fresh seed taken off my own plants germinates a lot quicker than overdried packet seed.

I cheated this year and I have ordered plug plants from Suttons. 16 plugs for £9.99. Only did this cos my seeds didn't germinate.image

Sow seed in greenhouse now and all will be well as not too hot yet.

I've grown V. bon from seed several times, and always sown it at around this time of year as it germinates more quickly. The plants will not be very big by the end of summer, but they still flower and I've then kept them for subsequent years when I've taken some cuttings to increase stock.

Until this year that is - I've just binned most of mine image
