Could someone please explain the diference between a Tree Peony and a Peony please? Also, is it possible to take cuttings? In the grounds where I work there is the most beautiful one I have ever seen, the flowers at the moment are HUGE and I would love to own one ! image

The first is a deciduous shrub that grows to about ten feet high or more. The second is a herbaceous perennial that is usually about knee height and disappears in winter.

Which are you wanting to grow?

Thanks Pansyface, I have about three of them but they are were only planted approx two years ago I am not sure what they are (will see if I still have info) but I seem to recall buying a tree peony but didn't realise they got that tall.

Sorry, some confusion here, I meant the one in the grounds where you work, is it a peony or a tree peony? Is this the one you want to take cuttings from?

Apologies Pansyface, the one at work, is the one I would like a cutting of. It is approx 1metre x 1metre and has massive pink flowers at least 8inches across!

The difference between a tree paeony and a herbaceous one is wood. The herbaceous disappears completely for winter, the tree paeony keeps a woody framework like the tree/shrub that it is. one metre is quite small for a tree paeony.

I will investigate further into the one at work but I am pretty sure that it and mine are  Peonies because they disappear in winter. If this is the case, can I take cuttings?

Meomye, only tree peonies can be propagated from cuttings.  Herbaceous types which disappear in winter have to be split in autumn:

If it produces seed, you could also try growing those but the resulting plants may not be the same as the parent.

I've taken root cuttings of peonies in the past. Patience is required though and I only ever got one to grow.

A root cutting is really the same as splitting them but on a much smaller scale. image

What I should have said is that you can't propagate herbaceous peonies from top-growth cuttings.
