Ants

A few years ago I planted a broom brush (Cytisus 'Burkwoodii') but it doesn't seem to have grown much.

I know they are slow growing but I have recently noticed when weeding the borders nearby that there are a lot of ants in that area.

Can ants affect growth of the plants? If so, what can I do to get rid of them?

Is there anything I can feed the bush to encourage growth?

Yes and Verdun's solution should work.  I had ants in a pot with a box plant in it and continually soaking it for a week or so convinced them to push off elsewhere although I had to repeat the treatment a couple of times as that pot was presumably a very 'des res' for some reason and they tried to move back in image
