paw hardy ground cover

Being a dog owner I find it difficult to keep them off the borders. Can anyone suggest a good hardy, preferably evergreen ground cover that would withstand cocker spaniel paws

What about ajuga? Its not paws but pee that seems to do most damage in my garden, you might need to keep them off until it gets chance to root image

Geraniums, lots of different varieties, colours, some have fragrance, and they withstand dogs trampling them.

What about a Creeping Juniper ground cover?  It's sort of poky, so will encourage the dogs to stay off.. looks good with daffodils growing up through in spring.  Sort of boring, but fairly dog proof and tough.  Maybe grow those as the 'ocean' surrounding islands of more visually appealing plants?
