I'd try washing them away.. then spraying the plant daily from underneath with the hose in order to discourage them taking up residence again.

I had this happen to my acer too, a couple of weeks ago. I was so scared of losing my beautiful tree, I've had it around 6 or 7 years now and I love it.

So bad was the infestation I took drastic action and used a bug spray, which I don't like to do really. But within days the bugs, although still there, were all dead. Just had to wait for the wind and the rain to remove the corpses from the branches and leaves.

The spray I use was recommended to me by a passing gardening veteran and 40 year nursery owner. He had noticed my pained expression in the pesticide Isle of my local garden centre.

This was around 4 years ago and its the only stuff I use asit is very fast and very effective.

BUT I only use it in extreme circumstances, I prefer to let nature deal with pests as a rule.
