Crab Apple

I have a 3 year old crab apple 'John Downie' and have just noticed that the leader has died back by about 6".  I'm going to need to prune that bit out anyway but as there are several pairs of leaves lower down I'm wondering if I could take it further, to create a goblet shape - and how far down is it safe to go, given that the leaves are opening now.  Any help much appreciated!

It is a bit on the late side for pruning but if it's dying back you really have no choice. I'd say do as little as possible now and do it properly in the autumn.image

Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
  • Thanks Pansyface ... that's what my common sense was telling me - but it's always nice to have it backed up!
