Unidentified bee

Hi, I have seen what I believe is a bee in the garden.  Looking down at it, It is dark brown in colour, part of it's body is soft (fur looking) but the rear end of it is hard shell like a beetle.  It is flying and collecting pollen with one long antenna from the front of it's head.  Sorry no picture - can anyone help identify this please.

Bombylius major maybe, aka bee fly or bee mimic. Lots about at the moment.

  • Ah, dammit! Not had enough coffee yet.

Yup, that sounds good too, although they tend to have a hairy thorax rather than a smooth one. Fits the bill of Brown hairy top half and sticky out proboscis. The plot thickens.

  • Well done nutcutlet,it is exactly that ,googled after yes posted your reply thank you very much.image
