Snowdrops

Hi. I bought a pack of 25 Snowdrop bulbs a couple of months ago and potted 5 bulbs into 5 x 3" pots and they are now about an inch tall. I plan to plant them out early next year and hope they flower, has anyone tried this and what success have you had? Do they need a spell of cold weather at any time during their growth in the pots?

I did this and left them outside after planting.  I waited until just after they had finished flowering before planting them in the garden.  This worked fine for me

Glad they came to life, they don't always when sold dried. You can usually see a bit of white at the tip as they come through. If you've just got one inch tall leaves you may have to wait til next year. Not sure if they need a spell of cold. They're hardy outdoor plants so they get it anyway. They started coming through here before the cold weather started so they're probably not fussy about that.

best to plant them out when they are green (when they have finished flowering) they will multiply better.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies, I have seen snowdrops in pots in garden centres but due to the cost of them I thought I would buy the bulbs this year and plant them in pots myself. I agree with the suggestions about planting them in the green after flowering and if successful I will buy a lot more bulbs next year as I have a large space to fill.

Relatively cheap in bulk in the green, around Feb/March. If you get single ones they'll seed around quite quickly. Doubles don't but they clump up pretty quickly and can be split up and replanted after flowering. You'll soon have a good patch.
