These are coming up this time every year in my garden and I don't know what they are. Can anybody shed any light? Thanks.

Yup. Called Mares Tail in our house, but I can tell you we have a not so polite name for it! It turns into a frondy green plant. The rhizome root system is incredibly long, so you can never get rid of it. If you want to spray it, you must crush it first to get through the tough 'skin'. Its a prehistoric weed and no doubt will still be on this planet way after we've gone!
It's a shame they are such a nuisance in the garden, kind of amazing to look at really.
