School Strawberries

I have recently taken over the Primary school gardening club and we have a raised bed full of strawberry plants. We had a bumper crop last summer but I know the plants have been in about 5 years. I was clearing away all the dead material today and there are lots of new growth. Should I just let the plants grow on, or should I take some out? We can't afford to buy any new plants this year but as last year's crop was so good I'm not sure if I should just leave it alone once I've taken away the old leaves.

I'd leave them and expect another cropimage

Are many likely to be runners that have grown on?  It could be many are younger than five years.  Let it grow!  Then stake down the runners this year and take out older plants that are crowding.
