Best plants for clay

I have what looks like pure clay and I wanted some advice on plants  - shrubs, climbers etc that may be able to cope or even like the conditions.

Thanks in advance

    Morning Miranda

Plenty to choose from. The golden rule I've found when gardening on clay is to keep on improving it over the years. There is a good write up here with recommended plants and soil improvement techniques:

It can be hard work to start with but I've learnt when it is best to work with my clay soil when it is not too wet and not too dry.

There is also the alternative of putting in raised beds with the soil of your choice, or growing in pots and containers. image

Improving the clay is worthwhile though, you will end up with very fertile soil in the end.

Roses love clay, most of the gardens I work in are on clay, roses are wonderful, although black spot can be a problem.
